What is Discovery?

Discovery is all about connecting students with Binghamton University. Our job is to help students connect learning in the classroom with their life outside the classroom. To make these connections, we have full-time professional staff, faculty and a select group of student assistants. Beginning in freshman year and continuing throughout the college years, Discovery reaches out to students and provides links to essential support services and extra-curricular learning.

Our philosophy is simple: the best way to reach students is through other BU students. The Discovery student assistants - Discovery Advisors and Peer Tutors- engage students where they live and support students’ college success. Discovery Advisors (DAs) are knowledgeable about the resources available on campus helping students choose a major, study elsewhere for a semester or learn about career options. DAs link students with campus services, faculty and advisors. Peer tutors’ expertly support students learning, teaching study skills and test-taking strategies. One of the highlights of Discovery’s programs is that our student assistants have flexible hours and are available daytime, evening and weekends to accommodate students’ busy schedules.

What are Discovery’s Programs?

Discovery’s goal is to transform Binghamton University into a living-learning community – one where learning extends beyond the classroom door. Discovery’s mission is to guide student exploration of their many academic and career interests. The programs under Discovery are: 1) Learning Communities, 2) First-Year and Senior-Year Experience Courses, 3) Tutoring, 4) Community Service-learning, 5) National Honor Societies and 6) National Student Exchange (NSE).
